Fact Fluency
Dear parents and guardians,
This year, our campus has been focusing on mastering the essential addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Below is more information about the importance of fact fluency.
What is fact fluency?
Math fact fluency is the ability of students to recall basic math facts quickly, accurately, and effortlessly. Recent research shows the importance of fact fluency as a foundation for more challenging math and even as a predictor of future math success. For these reasons, fact fluency is critical to our math curriculum this year.
How do we build fact fluency?
Fact fluency is more than memorizing the basic facts through repeated use of flashcards. During class, we will focus on building studentsā conceptual understanding of the basic math facts rather than focusing solely on memorization. Fluency work is incorporated into instruction daily through warm-ups, station activities, and computer applications.
What can you do to help?
Students are highly suggested to practice math facts at home. This extra practice helps the brain transition facts from short-term memory into long-term storage. Even with the time devoted to fact fluency during the school day, some students require extra practice to achieve he fluency level required to complete calculations accurately and efficiently.

How do we assess your childās fluency?
We assess students at the end of each grading quarter throughout the school year with a fact fluency application named Fact Track. The students practice their fact fluency in the application between the testing windows.
What is the fluency goal?
Fluent: Greater than 80%
Proficient: 71-80%
Approaching: Proficiency: 50-70%
Not Proficient: Less than 50%
To be identified as fluent, students must answer 60 Basic Facts in 4 min. Research says students should be able to respond in 3 seconds to basic facts to be considered fluent, but we have added a little extra time to allow for any possible distractions. To reach the 80% goal, a student must be able to answer facts accurately at a pace of 4.9 seconds per fact.
Each quarter, students in grades 2ā5 will participate in a Fact Fluency Face-Off, competing against other classes within their grade level.
Parent Access to Learning Programs
Your student has access to Progress Learning, Fact Track, and HMH Ed (Waggle) through the Klein Dashboard. These programs provide additional opportunities for students to practice and strengthen their skills at home.
Students will need their Klein Dashboard username (S#) and password to log in. If your child needs help retrieving their login information, please reach out to their teacher, who will be happy to assist.
