Newsletter Archive: Back to School August

Northampton Family,

We are off to a wonderful start this school year, and it has been such a joy to see our Colts already shining in their learning. AND... rain or shine, I’m here for our Colts, and teachers! Part of that means making sure our teachers feel supported and spoiled, and carpool in the rain! 💙🐴 I am truly grateful for your continued partnership as we work together to create the very best opportunities and learning environment for our students.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Fall Open House on Tuesday, September 10th, from 5:00–6:30 PM. This evening is designed especially for parents and guardians to connect with teachers, learn more about the school year, and see how we can continue working together to support our Colts’ success.

This year, we are so excited to watch our Colts grow, achieve, and shine—Mission Excellence: Full STEAM Ahead! 🚀✨

With Colt Pride,
Lisa Mackey
Principal, Northampton Elementary

ID Reminder

At Northampton, the safety of our Colts always comes first!

Please remember that all visitors must show a photo ID at the door every time you come to campus—even if we already know you. Additionally, for everyone’s safety, please do not allow anyone else to enter with you. Each visitor must check in at the door and show their own ID before entering. These important steps help us keep every student safe and ensure we are following district safety procedures.

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us maintain a secure learning environment for our students!

Attendance Matters

Showing up to school every day is one of the most important things your Colt can do for their learning. When students attend regularly, they:

  • Keep up with lessons and class activities

  • Develop important habits for success in school and life

  • Are more likely to reach their full potential academically

Every day counts! Let’s work together to make sure our Colts are in class, on time, and ready to learn. Your presence makes a difference! 🌟

Counselor's Corner

My name is Mrs. Wondolowski, and I am your school counselor here at Northampton Elementary.

As we kick off the school year, it has been wonderful to see our Colts in Action and learn about the ways our students demonstrate respect, responsibility, and kindness. These guidelines represent our Colts’ Expectations for behavior throughout the school building. You’ll notice posters in key locations as reminders for both staff and students—be sure to check them out when you visit!

This month, our lesson, “Words Matter,” will focus on choosing our words carefully—both spoken and written—and understanding the positive impact our words can have on everyone around us.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

STEAM at Northampton

This month in STEAM, our Colts are exploring the Engineering Design Process! This step-by-step approach helps students solve problems while connecting to our core values and learner profiles.

The Steps:

  1. Ask – Identify the problem and understand the challenge.

  2. Research & Imagine – Gather information and brainstorm possible solutions.

  3. Plan – Choose the best solution and create a blueprint.

  4. Create – Build a model or prototype.

  5. Test & Improve – Try it out, see what works, and make adjustments.

  6. Share & Reflect – Present the solution and think about what was learned.

Our Colts will be diving deeper into what each step really means, applying them to real-world challenges, and reflecting on how their actions show creativity, collaboration, and perseverance.

We’re excited to see our students think like engineers and grow as thoughtful, innovative learners!

Our Colts are charging Full STEAM Ahead with exciting hands-on learning across every grade level! In ECSE, students built sandcastles by experimenting with shapes and forms, created suction with water droppers, and explored color mixing. Kindergarten explored texture and the properties of matter while also creating with STEM bins, and first graders took on an engineering challenge to build a house taller than it is wide. Second graders have been diving into STEAM in their classrooms, connecting science, technology, engineering, art, and math to their daily lessons, while third graders explored the Learning Pit, reflecting on how perseverance and problem-solving help them climb out when challenges get tough. In fourth grade, students used the engineering design process to design and test ways to hold up our library books, and fifth graders tied literacy and engineering together by reading School’s First Day of School before building schools strong enough to hold up to 3 lbs. In physical education, students measured and graphed their heart rates before and after activities, analyzed how different movements affect the cardiovascular system, strategized in flag games, and explored motion through locomotor activities. In art, Colts are using creativity and design to explore visual storytelling, while in music, students are discovering rhythm, patterns, and movement connections that link directly to STEAM learning. Across all grade levels, Colts are also engaging with STEM bins to create, experiment, and problem-solve—and even our volleyball unit became a STEAM lesson as students learned that what goes up ⬆️ must come down ⬇️ thanks to gravity. It’s been an incredible week of discovery, creativity, and innovation for our Colts! 🌟
