👋Note from Mrs. Rodgers

Hi Krahn Family,

Did you know that missing just two days of school each month can add up to nearly twenty days—or a whole month—of lost learning by the end of the year? Every school day matters because it builds the foundation for reading, math, and social skills that help our students succeed. Children thrive when they have a consistent routine that shows school is important, and simple steps like setting a regular bedtime, laying out clothes the night before, and arriving on time each morning can make a big difference. Strong attendance in elementary school creates confident, engaged learners who are ready to grow and achieve, and if your family is ever facing challenges that make attendance difficult, please know we are here to partner with you and provide resources to help. Together, we can build strong habits that support every child’s success.

Math Moments

💡 Focus Skill

This month 3rd grade students are exploring multiplication concepts. In addition to simply memorizing basic multiplication facts, you can try playing these low prep games at home with your child:

1. Card Flip Multiply

Materials: Deck of cards (remove face cards or treat them as 10)
How to Play:

  1. Each player flips two cards and multiplies the numbers.

  2. The player with the higher product keeps all the cards.

  3. Continue until the deck is gone—whoever has the most cards wins.

2. Roll & Race

Materials: Two dice and paper
How to Play:

  1. Roll both dice and multiply.

  2. Write the product and keep a running total of all products rolled.

  3. First player to reach (or get closest to) 200 without going over wins.

3. Fact Flash Walk

Materials: None
How to Play:

  1. Parent or sibling calls out a multiplication fact during a walk, drive, or while making dinner.

  2. The child answers and then creates a related fact (example: “If 6 × 4 = 24, what is 24 ÷ 6?”).

  3. Take turns asking each other to keep it fun.

🎲 Game of the Month

Place Value Pick

A quick, fun game for 2nd graders to practice place value. Players draw digits one at a time and choose where to place them in the hundreds, tens, or ones to create the largest or smallest 3-digit number. Once a digit is placed it cannot be moved, so every choice counts.

Goal: Build the greatest (or smallest) 3-digit number.

Materials:

  • Deck of cards 0–9 (or just cut paper squares with digits 0–9).

  • Paper and pencil for each player.

How to Play:

  1. Draw – Player draws one card at a time and decides where to place it in their Hundreds, Tens, or Ones spot.

  2. Lock In – Once a digit is placed, it can’t be moved.

  3. Complete – After three draws, compare numbers. The largest (or smallest) number wins that round.

Variations to Keep It Fresh:

  • Play for 4-digit numbers by adding a Thousands place.

  • Change the goal to “closest to 500” or “even number only.”

  • Race the clock: reveal cards quickly to add excitement.

Why It’s Great:
Kids practice strategic thinking while reinforcing the value of each digit and how its place changes the whole number.

🏆 Math Mindset Corner

Encourage your child to say, "I can try a new strategy" instead of "I’m just not a math person."

🌟 Digital Resources for Extra Practice

Students can use Math 180 (Flex), Waggle Math, and Progress Learning at home for extra practice by accessing these platforms through their Klein Dashboard. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you need your child’s log in information. These programs provide interactive lessons, games, and personalized practice that reinforce skills learned in class. Spending just a few minutes each day helps strengthen understanding and builds confidence in math.

📈 Fact Fluency

Our campus showed growth in fact fluency when comparing end-of-year data to pre-assessment results—thank you for supporting practice at home! Please continue practicing at home, as fact fluency remains a key focus in the district.

Parent letters will be sent home during the second week of October. Please watch for your child’s letter to see areas of success and growth in fact fluency.

Literacy Tip of the Month

When reading with your child, try asking open-ended questions that go beyond “yes” or “no.” For example: “What do you think will happen next?”, “Why do you think the character did that?”, or “How would you feel if you were in this story?”

These kinds of questions encourage your child to think deeply, make connections, and practice putting their ideas into words—all important skills for strong reading comprehension. Evenif your child’s answer is short, pausing to wonder together builds their confidence as a reader and thinker.
