Dear families,
We are grateful for the trust you place in our school and for your ongoing partnership in your child’s learning and growth.
This month our character education lessons focus on conflict resolution, cooperation, and teamwork. Teachers guide daily mini-lessons to teach these important skills throughout November.
Parents play a big role in helping children learn effective conflict resolution skills. Here are some ways parents can assist their children with developing this important skill:
Model Healthy Conflict Resolution: Children learn a lot from observing how adults handle conflicts, so it's important to model respectful communication, active listening, compromise, and empathy.
Teach Communication Skills: Parents can teach their children how to express their thoughts, feelings, and needs in a clear and respectful manner. Encourage children to use "I" statements (e.g., "I feel upset when...") and active listening skills (e.g., making eye contact, nodding) when communicating with others.
Practice Empathy: Help children understand how others might feel in different situations. Encourage them to consider other people's perspectives and feelings when resolving conflicts. Parents can ask questions like, "How do you think your friend feels right now?" to promote empathy.
Encourage Problem-Solving Skills: Guide children through the process of identifying the problem, brainstorming possible solutions, evaluating the pros and cons of each solution, and selecting the best solution together. Encourage creativity and flexibility in finding solutions to conflicts.
We are grateful for your ongoing support in reinforcing the character skills we teach at school. Your encouragement at home — listening to your child, practicing cooperation, and modeling calm problem-solving — makes a real difference.
